Alfred Dubucand Delabrierre was an exceptional sculptor whose life remains shrouded in mystery, with little recorded about him beyond his remarkable body of work. Born in Paris on March 29, 1829, and passing away in 1912, Delabrierre dedicated his life to the art of animal sculpture. Initially studying painting under Delestre, he quickly shifted his focus to sculpting animals and debuted at the Salon of 1848 with notable pieces such as Terrier Holding a Hare and Wounded Deer. Over his prolific career, Delabrierre showcased a vast array of animal studies at the Salon until 1882, ranging from domestic creatures like hunting dogs to exotic species, each rendered with an unmatched spirit of realism. His mastery of the Animalier school is evident in his depictions of lions, tigers, camels, bears, and other creatures. Delabrierre's works are celebrated for their attention to anatomical precision and the expressive character he imbued in his subjects. One of his recurring themes, Lion Attacking a Crocodile, exemplifies his skill in capturing the raw power and drama of animal life. These dynamic sculptures are not only technically impressive but also captivating from every angle, showcasing his ability to breathe life into bronze. This particular sculpture, finished in a rich red-brown patina, is a testament to Delabrierre's artistry and enduring legacy. The vivid details and lifelike energy of the piece reflect his dedication to realism and his profound understanding of his subjects. His contributions to the Animalier movement remain influential, making his works a cherished addition to collections and galleries that celebrate the intersection of art and nature.
